Before Oak Drive Co.
My career didn't start in Margaret River - it started long before I ever moved here. What actually brought me to this region was wine, plain and simple. I came for that, and stayed to build a life around it.
Once I was here, I spent years working cellar door at some of the region's most respected producers. That's where I actually learned the job, not from a hospitality manual: how to read what a guest wants in the first five minutes, and how to treat the last guest of a long day exactly the same as the first, not just on the easy days.
None of that is a secret. Any good cellar door host will tell you personal attention and consistency are the whole job. What I took from those years wasn't a trick nobody else knows - it's that I got to practise it, at a high level, for years, before I ever put my own name on a business.

When I recommend a winery, it's because I've been there myself and rate what they're doing - some of them are the well-known names for good reason, some are smaller producers most visitors would never find on their own. Size or reputation isn't the test. Whether I'd genuinely send a friend there is.
Some guests want a fully planned itinerary, decided in detail at the time of booking. Others want a private driver, a rough idea, and the freedom to adjust as the day goes. Either way, we plan it together, not the other way around.
My Approach
Margaret River is one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, and the numbers back that up: it produces roughly 2% of the country's total wine grape crush, yet accounts for over 20% of Australia's premium wine. Around 100 cellar doors are open to visitors, spread across a stretch of coast about 100km long, running between the two lighthouses that mark the region - Cape Naturaliste in the north, Cape Leeuwin in the south. There are more than 100 caves beneath it, though only a handful are open to the public. A handful of restaurants here carry important accolades, and that's before you count the degustations, the breweries, the pub lunches, and the cafes that never make a list but are just as good a reason to stay another day.
All of which is to say: it's a big, layered region, and that's exactly what makes it hard to plan for a first-time visitor. Cellar doors keep different hours, the best producers are spread wide, good lunch tables book out, and trying to drive and taste in the same afternoon usually means doing neither properly.
I handle the logistics quietly in the background - the timing, the navigation, the bookings - so you can actually be present for the day instead of managing it.
Why Oak Drive Co.
Oak is one of the most defining tools in winemaking and one of the easiest to get wrong. A barrel can round out a wine's texture, add warmth, layer in notes of vanilla, spice, toast. But too much oak, or oak used out of proportion to the fruit, and it stops complementing the wine and starts covering it up. The best winemakers know that oak isn't there to be the star. It's there in the background, doing its work quietly, so the fruit and the site can still speak for themselves. That's restraint as craft.
Drive is the other half of it. Not just the vehicle that gets you from cellar door to cellar door, but the drive to actually understand what's in your glass. To ask why a wine tastes the way it does, to go past the tasting notes and see the barrel room, meet the people, follow the decisions that shaped it. That curiosity is what turns a visit to Margaret River wine country into an education.
Put them together and that's where the name comes from: the craft of restraint, and the drive to go deeper. It's the same philosophy I bring to every private wine tour I run, showing you the Margaret River region with the same care winemakers give their wine. Just enough, quality over quantity, in the right places. The destination speaking for itself.

Every tour is mine to drive. There's no handoff to someone else, no second driver you might get instead - the standard you're reading about here is the one you'll actually get, because I'm the one delivering it.
